Ennim, former home of Viscount Willie Whitelaw comes onto the market
For 43 years Ennim was home to the man at the heart of Thatcher’s Conservative government, Willie Whitelaw, later Viscount of Penrith.

Viscount Whitelaw was a stalwart of the Conservative government for 28 years, holding numerous offices in cabinet.  Now his stunning former home, near Penrith is up for sale, giving buyers a chance to purchase a property with an illustrious and fascinating history and somewhere which has, over its lifetime, played host to numerous dignitaries.

With its own gate lodge, this magnificent seven-bedroom country house, surrounded by nine acres of grounds, gardens and woodland is being sold by the Penrith Office of H&H King, with a guide price of £1,695,000.

Ennim is an outstanding property, acquired in 2001 by the current owner who purchased it from Celia Whitelaw, widow of Viscount Willie Whitelaw.  Since then the property has been refurbished to a high standard, and now offers an excellent quality of living surrounded by beautiful grounds and countryside.

From being appointed leader of the commons under Edward Heath, Whitehall came to be considered Thatcher’s right hand man, gaining a reputation for absolute loyalty that led him to be rewarded with the position of Deputy Leader, which he held until he moved to the House of Lords in 1983, where he became Leader of the House of Lords.

On bringing this unique property to market, Richard Stronach, Director of H&H King said: “Willie Whitelaw was a great ambassador for Cumbria and we are delighted to have been invited to sell his former home, as many would say if only the walls could talk!  It is rare that a property with such an interesting past comes on the market, and it is even rarer for it to be of such a high quality.  Ennim is a truly special place and provides everything a buyer could wish for; an intriguing history, stunning period features, modern amenities and an idyllic location.”

Throughout Ennim’s history, the property has been used for entertaining, and today still offers ample opportunity to do just that with reception rooms and a large dining room, complete with ornate mahogany chimney piece.  There is a large kitchen, recently refurbished, and a second smaller kitchen with a four oven AGA, pantry and scullery.

Overlooking the gardens the library has been maintained in its original style, with fitted handcrafted shelving and a carved oak mantle over the fireplace.  Upstairs, the master suite offers commanding dual aspect views across the countryside, with an additional dressing room with fitted units and a large ensuite bathroom. In addition to this there are a further six bedrooms, two of which have dressing rooms and there of which are ensuite.

The grounds of the property continue the high standards of its interior, with a long sweeping carriage drive providing a dramatic arrival to the property, the entrance of which features a two bedroomed lodge alongside the pillared gate.  For animal lovers, the property features high quality loose box stables with fitted tack room and stone kennels, perfect for country pursuits.

Surrounding the property is nine acres of parkland gardens, while to the rear of the property well-kept gardens feature an ornamental pond and a former tennis court.  There is also a highly productive kitchen garden and trained fruit trees.

Additional fields to the North and South of the property may be available through separate negotiation and extend to 16.78 acres in total.  Click here to be redirected to the property sales particulars.
